What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR Therapy is a process that is different from other forms of therapy. We will walk through it together one step at a time, at a pace that feels comfortable to you.
Treatment Planning (1-3 Sessions)
We start by taking time to understand your history and what results you want most out of EMDR therapy so that we can develop a treatment plan that's tailored to you.
Preparation (1-3 Sessions)
Next, you will learn techniques to help you manage distressing emotions that may arise. Your therapist will teach you self-soothing and coping exercises that will help you manage potential emotional responses during the later stages of therapy. At every stage, we will only move forward as you are comfortable. We will never rush you.
Assessment (1-2 Sessions)
During the assessment phase, you and your therapist will choose a memory to focus on. You will identify the visual imagery associated with this memory, as well as any negative self-beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations. You'll also determine a positive belief that you'd prefer to hold instead.
Desensitization (5-12 Sessions)
This stage is the the heart of EMDR therapy, during which you will focus on the traumatic memory while engaging in eye movements or other bilateral stimulation guided by the therapist. The goal here is to ease and reprocess the emotional distress triggered by the memory.
Installation & Body Scan (1-2 Sessions)
Your therapist will then work with you to strengthen the positive belief you identified earlier. This is known as installation. During the body scan phase, you will focus on any residual physical sensations associated with the traumatic memory, and additional work will be done to desensitize these responses.
Closure & Re-Evaluation (1 Session)
Closure is how we make sure you leave each therapy session feeling stable and safe, using the exercises we went through during the preparation stage. During evaluation, we assess your progress and decide which memory or situation to target next. We repeat this at the start of each subsequent session to stay aware to how you are feeling.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a unique type of psychotherapy developed to help individuals overcome distress associated with traumatic memories. It’s based on the idea that our brains can get stuck in the process of digesting traumatic events, leading to intense, lingering emotions.
While trauma therapy frequently focuses on calming the storm of immediate emotional turbulence, EMDR goes a step further. EMDR utilizes rapid, rhythmic eye movements to stimulate the processing of traumatic memories and change the way these memories are stored in the brain, making them less distressing and more manageable.
The goal is to reduce the intensity of traumatic memories so that they no longer cause overwhelming responses. Because it addresses the source of emotional distress rather than just managing symptoms. This approach has been shown to result in secure, lasting change.

When you go through a traumatic experience, your brain goes into overdrive and become overwhelmed to the point that it is unable to process facts naturally. This can cause shock, denial, anxiety, guilt, anger, sadness, confusion, or even dissociation in the short term. If trauma is not properly processed, it can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and personality and behavioural changes in the long run. It’s also common to have recurring, distressing thoughts or flashbacks to the event.
Although EMDR was initially developed to treat PTSD, its application has grown to help people dealing with a variety of mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, panic, and eating disorders. It is also beneficial for helping people in processing traumatic memories such as sexual assault, physical abuse, car accidents, war, natural disasters, and medical procedures. EMDR is used by some therapists to treat performance anxiety, grief, and attachment disorders. However, it may not be appropriate for every situation, and during our initial consultation, our therapists can determine whether it is the best approach for your specific needs.
EMDR is designed to change how traumatic or distressing memories are stored in the brain, as opposed to traditional talk therapies that focus on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors or developing coping strategies. Recalling traumatic events while receiving bilateral sensory input, such as side-to-side eye movements, hand tapping, or auditory tones, is how EMDR works to achieve this. The goal is to assist the brain in reprocessing these memories, which decreases their long-term impact. EMDR therapy often requires fewer sessions than other types of therapy, and it does not require detailed descriptions of the event, direct challenging of beliefs, extended exposure, or homework. EMDR therapy is distinct in its approach and has been shown to be effective for trauma treatment.
